Job Application Email Writing Tips - The Ready Writers

March 16, 2020by readywriters

First impression matters and that is exactly what a job application email is. It is an opportunity to catch the attention of your potential employer and wow them. You probably are not the only one applying for the job, so your ability to stand out is what will give you an edge over others. Here are some of the things you need to pay close attention to.

  1. Subject Line: In most job adverts that require an email, instructions are given on what the subject line should be; most times, it is the vacant position. When the instructions are specific, ensure you stick to them to avoid getting your email deleted even before you have a chance to prove yourself in an interview.

But what if there are no instructions on what the subject line should be? In this case, use your name and the position you are applying for as the subject. Do not leave the subject line blank!

Example:

David Omolade – Financial Analyst Position.

  1. Salutation: It is always nice to give your salutation a personal touch, so if you know the name of the hiring manager, then it will be good you address him or her with their name in your salutation. But be sure you are sending it to the right person. It will be a disqualifier for you to address your email to “Sarah” when “Ben” is the one assigned to attend to it. However, if you do not know the hiring manager’s name, “Dear Hiring Manager” can work, or simply “To whom it may concern.”
  2. First Paragraph: This should address why you are writing. It is also important to mention how you saw the job application, where you saw it and the date you saw it.
  3. Middle Paragraph: This is your opportunity to blow your trumpet and tell the hiring manager why you are the right man for the job. Let the hiring manager know why you are a good fit for the job and what you can offer the organization. Mention your experience, your accomplishments and the past responsibilities you have handled (which are related to the position).
  4. Final Paragraph: Appreciate the recipient for taking the time to read your email. Mention that your resume is attached and state your willingness to provide more information if needed.
  5. Close: Use a polite close like “sincerely” and then add your name to close off the email.
  6. Attach your CV: Do not forget to attach your CV to the email. Check the job advert for any specific format and make sure you follow the format. If there is no format, then send in either Microsoft Word or PDF.

Remember, first impressions matter and your goal is to stand out among the flurry of applications that might be received by the hiring manager. Make sure your message is concise, smart, and accurately represents who you are.

Let’s design together

One of the reasons we became interior designers in the first place was because we love collecting and then putting it all together. But when you’re designing your own house, the hardest thing is to finish it, as you’re always adding your next favourite thing, and finally there’s no space left.
